Why should I (my teenager) take the driver’s education course and what are the requirements?
SC is one of the 32 requiring teens to take drivers education before receiving a driver’s license. If you are 15 or 16 years old and applying for your driver’s license, you must complete the Certification of School Attendance, Driver’s Education and Driving Practice and all of the following must be true:
- You have a beginner’s permit for more than 180 days
- You are enrolled in school (not suspended or expelled), and you have satisfactory attendance.
- You have practiced driving with a licensed individual listed on the Consent for Minor for at least 40 hours, including ten hours of night driving.
How much is the course?
The student driver will receive an 8-hour classroom lecture and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training for a non-refundable fee of $400.00.
How long is the course?
The course will begin on the scheduled Saturday with an 8-hour classroom lecture. Depending on the student’s availability, the behind-the-wheel training schedules will vary. However, the behind-the-wheel training schedule will be established on the student’s start date. The average time of completion is 2-3 weeks.
What do I need to begin the course?
The student driver must hold a beginner’s permit for more than 180 days that is not expired. For additional requirements and studying materials (school enrollment and attendance, etc.), please refer to the SCDMV website.
During behind-the-wheel training, how many people will be in the vehicle?
To promote high quality interaction where students feel heard and to gauge the student’s progress and mastery, there will only be the instructor and 1 student in the vehicle. This avoids overstimulation and eliminates distractions. During the 8-hour classroom lecture, there will be a maximum of 10 students per session.
What driver’s education information will be covered?
Drivers’ education is a valuable first step for teaching the student driver everything from automobile basics, to driving laws in the state of South Carolina, to life-saving defensive driving maneuvers.
Some of the topic that will be covered include:
- Road signs, traffic signals, and right of way
- How to safely change lanes, turn, and enter or exit roadways.
- Basic vehicle safety and maintenance
- Proper strategies for emergency situations
- AND MUCH MORE!
Can I use my own car?
Because of state requirements and liabilities, all driving lessons will be performed in the company’s vehicle.
Will my license be guaranteed at the end of my lessons?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will receive a license at the end of the course. However, the course is designed to incorporate all learning styles with a simple approach in teaching the required information to promote and establish safe drivers.
Remember, “We make driving a breeze!” Let’s get started.
